She had been attacked twice by a neighbor’s off-leash dog. Both incidents caused serious physical injuries that required emergency care, and the second was especially severe—she needed two surgeries. Even more heartbreaking, that attack happened in our own yard, which had always been her safe place. After that, Mila no longer felt safe anywhere. She became extremely fearful, even around dogs she had once been friendly with. She was constantly on edge—reactive, defensive, barking more than usual, and lunging at anything or anyone. Even her eyes seemed different. I knew I couldn’t help her through this on my own, and her veterinarian recommended seeking professional help. There truly aren’t words to express how grateful I am for Tommy Bates, who worked what felt like magic with Mila. He suggested beginning her training at home, recognizing that her trauma had happened in what was once her safe space. That first session was unforgettable. Mila had become so reactive and fearful that we couldn’t have visitors—but she allowed Tom to come in, and I truly mean *allowed*. From the very beginning, my husband and I saw that Tom has a special gift with dogs. He understands who they are and what they need. His patience is remarkable, and the way he communicated with Mila gently helped her feel more at ease over time. His training wasn’t just for Mila—it was for us, too. We had so much to learn. Each week, we worked together on foundational skills that helped rebuild her confidence. Tom guided us with thoughtful questions and clear, compassionate coaching. Little by little, we began to see changes. Mila started to relax. Her home became her safe place again. Mila is still a work in progress—and so am I—but we are both learning and growing every day. At home, she continues to practice what she’s learned, and I couldn’t be prouder of how brave she’s becoming. Most importantly, she’s happy again and living her best life. I cannot thank Tommy Bates enough for everything he has done—and continues to do—for Mila and for us. When our veterinarian recommended professional help, I’m so grateful we listened and found Tom. With heartfelt thanks, Saundra, Rafael, and Mila Yoda 🐾Posted on Amanda BullTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I cannot say enough about how valuable training was with Tommy and Engaged K9’s. My husband and I went from our almost 13 year-old chocolate lab who was perfect, to an 8 week yellow lab puppy with endless energy. Needless to say, the transition was really difficult. I wish we would have called Tommy sooner. From the FIRST session with Tommy, we saw an immediate change- especially with leash walking. Living in a home without a fenced yard, it was really important for us to safely walk on a leash. Tommy allowed us to master that in one session! I also cannot say enough about Tommy’s approach and supportiveness. Tommy is kind, non-judgmental and has a love for dogs and helping dog parents. During sessions, he broke commands down in a very simple way, encouraged us, and built our confidence. Tommy was available anytime we had a question, needed to work through something, or share progress and great news. I would recommend Tommy and Engaged K9’s to anyone looking to support their dog’s development!Posted on Molly Baldwin-AbbottTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We have a one year old Shepard mix we adopted who had some leash reactivity with other dogs. After seeking recommendations of trainers and meeting a few, Tommy came highly recommended. After our initial consultation when he came to meet our dog at our house, we knew he was the right fit for us and our pup. Within just a few sessions the leash reactivity was under control. Walking our dog is now enjoyable! He taught us basic obedience as well that our dog has responded well to. Tommy gave us clear and concise training to work on at home and made sure we understood how to do it. He was very professional while also personable. It is very evident that he cares deeply about dogs and seeing them and their owners succeed. He was always available when we had questions and responded very quickly. I am so thankful we found Tommy and would highly recommend him!Posted on Cayla HydeTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have a very stubborn, prey driven, husky mix that I adopted recently and he was a nightmare on leash. Tommy helped me get control of him to where he is able to walk in a heel and recall on command. He was patient and knowledgeable, which really helped when training with the e collar. I would definitely recommend to anyone!Posted on EileenTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tommy was very good with my dog, experienced and knowledgeable with training, and taught us a lot in just a few sessions. I especially appreciated how he took his time during each session, and was not watching the clock to make sure we ended exactly on time. I, and my dog, highly recommend him!Posted on Lovey StofkoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tommy has changed our lives. Having a private trainer come into your home to assess space and lifestyle is impactful. Lilly is the most well behaved dog I have ever owned. A few of our challenges, resolved with private training. 1). Hosting Easter was a disaster. The next training session Tommy changed crate placement. And taught me what to do, and not do, when someone is at our front door. Lilly can now calm herself and be civilized when greeting. 2). Lilly was the Tasmanian Devil jumping out of her skin waiting for a meal. Now she stays on her bed until I have put her bowl of food on the floor and give her the release command. 3). Lilly no longer fights me trying to get out of the back of our SUV. She sits calmly with the door wide open. While I put her collar and leash on her. She waits for the release command before jumping out. 4). Tommy makes himself available for the unexpected. Going to dinner with friends from out of town. The plan was to leave their 2 puppies in our house with Lilly. An hour before their arrival, I texted Tommy. He explained how dogs bond. And gave clear instructions on what to do. His advice is not something I would have thought of. Training is personalized. Whatever you are struggling with. Tommy is able to teach you how to work through it.Posted on Kim YencoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tommy is an amazing trainer who connects great with dogs even those who have had rough pasts. My Scout took to him well and he is a NEW dog walking on a leash outside! Not just that but he stopped pulling, barking and going crazy when seeing dogs and people on walks. The walks are now enjoyable for both Scoit and me! I highly recommend him and will be continuing training with Scout and my other dogs!Posted on Mark ScarboroughTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had an awesome experience with Tom. He has an incredible amount of training knowledge and does a great job training both the parents and your dog. He helped us to overcome various behavior issues and some fear-based challenges we were having with our recently adopted pitbull. Tom did a great job of customizing his approach to our specific needs and also worked around our hectic work schedule. Would highly recommend!Posted on Ilene GrodzinskyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Tommy spent time with us always making sure to answer our questions. He helped us to go from being unable to safely walk our dog for fear that we would be hurt from his hard pulling to walking with the dog by our side with a loose leash. I highly recommend him.Posted on Dana CTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Indy is a 14 mo. old Shih Tzu/Bijon Frise mix. He is easily responsive and I had worked with him for some of the basic commands, but he only did them when he wanted to. And for the life of me, I couldn't get him to walk without pulling the leash and he had no clue what I was asking when I said "Stay." Tommy was great at giving me clear explanations for Indy's behavior and teaching me how to better communicate what I wanted from Indy. Tommy is accessible and responsive if I need help, and I love the way he interacted with Indy. I would enthusiastically recommend Engaged K9's.Load more
